Special needs educator

WIAIH (The West Island Association for the Intellectually Disabled) is a charity that aims to increase opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities or autism spectrum disorders, support their families and raise community awareness.

Located in Sainte-Geneviève, the Pat Roberts Development Center is ideal for children with developmental delays, both diagnosed and undiagnosed. It provides an appropriate learning experience through playful interactions for children from birth to age 6, while offering support to their families in a positive and proactive way.

WIAIH is looking for a Special Educator to work full-time, Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm.

Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of Development Center Manager Pat Roberts, the Specialized Educator :

  • Care for small groups of children with special needs by planning and organizing group activities that are stimulating and developmentally appropriate for each child; ensure their safety and well-being;
  • Incorporate objectives targeted by other professionals, e.g. occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech therapy, etc.
  • Identify the most relevant needs of each child in cooperation with parents and other professionals involved, set up interventions and detect their impact;
  • Communicate relevant information to families about the child’s development and progress;
  • Support parents’ efforts to encourage autonomy and learning in the home environment;
  • Empowering parents to take action for their children;
  • Write an observation report three times a year describing each child in all aspects of development (receptive and expressive language, autonomy, emotion regulation, gross and fine motor skills, social skills, play skills).
  • Keep the premises organized and in good condition.

Requirements:

  • College diploma in special education or equivalent training;
  • Relevant experience in special education;
  • Bilingualism, both written and spoken;
  • Good knowledge of child development, atypical development in relation to a delay or diagnosis, and the various interventions and approaches available.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement intervention strategies for challenging behaviours
  • Demonstrate empathetic listening and excellent interpersonal skills
  • A keen interest in teamwork.
